When writing your speech make sure that you make a rough draft. The rough draft is a way for you to free write. Free write your speech, ignoring grammar and spelling at first, then edit it heavily after or have someone edit it for you.

Keep your speech short and simple. You can keep your speech short and simple by populating your paragraph with short sentences. Avoid long-winded sentences to avoid boring your listening audience.

Avoid using fancy words that can only be found in the dictionary. Not all of your audience can understand what you are saying so just use regular, conversational English. This will draw in the interest of your listening audience.

Make a single, unifying theme and then stick with it. You can start your groom’s speech by thanking everyone who attended. You can also tell anecdotes or inspirational stories that had an impact on you and your bride’s life. You can tell a number of stories or crack a number of jokes as long as you stay within your single theme.

Next, you have to make use of descriptive words. Show, don’t tell. Use similes, metaphors, and imagery to engage the attention of your audience. This is a great way for your audience to exercise their imagination and interest.

You know the groom best, so you decide what to say, but I prefer one main anecdote and some funny comments about it. I can almost guarantee that you’ll get laughs, and when you do you should pause to let them enjoy the moment – enjoy the moment yourself too – and carry on when the laughter has subsided and they can hear you again.

Finally you should say something about the bride and then propose a toast. That’s it, you’ve just given a great best man speech.

When trying to think of ideas for a best man speech I like to write down as much about the groom as I can think. Everything that comes into my head goes down on paper and when I can’t think of anything else I leave it.

If I go back after a few days usually there will be some other ideas, so once again I start writing until everything is exhausted. Once you get to that stage you should remove anything that is in bad taste, crude, offensive or unsuitable for the bride, her family, or any wedding guest to hear.

That leaves you the basis of your speech. Pick the best ideas and expand them. If they’re not funny rewrite them until they are. Once you’ve got that out the way you’re ready to go.

Being a best man is not a job for the faint-hearted. A best man has to be more than a public speaker. He has to be a good M.C., an excellent organizer and, preferably good at dancing with old aunts. Many couples choose the wrong M.C. for sentimental reasons. The groom chooses his brother or his best friend because of family ties or the loyalty of friendship. The truth of the matter is that neither of them might be a suitable choice.

If the best man is forgetful, for instance, he may forget the ring. There is a chance too he may forget some important part of the preparations such as which night you are having your rehearsal in church. If the best man is a shy kind of a person he will be useless at helping your guests feel and home or making them mix and mingle. The worst attribute of a best man is one who is unable to speak in public. His speech should set the tone for the wedding and if he hums and haws and doesn’t know what to say the guests will feel uncomfortable and so too will the bride and groom.

A best man needs to be cool and capable. He needs to be able to handle Uncle Joe if he has too much to drink or a guest who is taken ill suddenly. He has to be the kind of person who will ensure that you have the tickets for your honeymoon, that your wedding presents are safe and that the groom arrives at the church on time. Preferably too he should have a good relationship with the bride so that she feels that her big day will not be spoiled because of some oversight. She, as well as the groom, has to have confidence in him.

So when you are choosing a best man consider exactly what he has to do. Then ask your brother or your friend if they feel capable of the doing the job properly… Quite often they will be thankful to be spared the task and grateful if you choose someone else. It is an honour to be chosen as best man, of course, but it can also be a handicap for those who aren’t articulate or organised. So choose your best man with care and then relax.

A wedding day is a special occasion for the bride and groom and for their families as well.
