Groom Speeches – Fresh Ideas

As if the weeks, if not months that you spent sweating thinking about how you could propose to your now wife wasn’t enough stress, you now need to think about performing groom speeches at your own wedding. I know, I know, it’s really not fair; you should be allowed to sit down and wallow in your pride all evening, but tradition takes its rightful place and pushes you towards the microphone either way.

Speak from the heart

Okay, so you have the microphone in front of you, the father of the bride and your carefully selected best man have performed their fantastic and funny speeches, you’re next! Of course, you will need to begin by thanking the two next important men in attendance of your wedding for their speeches and hope that you are able to upstage them. One area where the pressure is off is in the comedy stakes, this can be left predominantly to the best man, and hopefully he has already done you proud. You should always start with a heartfelt thank you to all of your guests for coming, especially those who have made a long journey to share your special day with you.

The next person to thank is no other than your mother and father in law. After all, they did bring up their daughter well and molded her into the beautiful young woman that she is today and you have them to thank for that. If you wish to be cheeky, you could sneak in a few obvious comments about how your new bride has inherited her mother’s stunning looks and then pop in a quick wink to your new mother in law. She will either wink back at you for all to see jokingly, or laugh; either way your cheeky side has been shown.

Remember why you are there

Oh yes, you are marrying the woman of your dreams and the love of your life. Although the family and friends usually enjoy the day, they will never remember it as the happy couple will do, it is all about you. More importantly, it is all about the lady who will be dominating your future. This is the time to pay homage to her, you can be as subtle or as romantic as you wish to be; you could always save the lovelier sentiments until you are alone later in the evening.

Talk about how you met and how you fell in love; basically, make her feel like the most special girl in the world. After all, you would not be lying; this is why you wanted to marry her. Think about how some might say you do not deserve her but express your thankfulness that her eyesight wasn’t so great when you first met. If you think about it carefully, you will be able to express heartfelt emotion in a light-hearted way, which will not make your audience feel uncomfortable.

Funny Grooms Speeches – A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Wedding …

Most professional speech writers think that wedding reception guests are one of the hardest audiences to write for. This is because of the huge diversity of the audience, which will normally consist of a variety of different ages, sexes and religions. Some guests will be sober, others not so!

In addition to this the wedding audience is made up of many different social groups from the groom’s side and the bride’s side. Amongst these are close personal friends, immediate family, distant family, work colleagues, acquaintances, and neighbors. This makes it very difficult to judge the extent that you can get away with saying things, and where exactly any boundaries lie.

Such a wide range of social groups means that there will be many people present at the groom’s speech who do not know many other guests. This will make them feel slightly excluded and will help to reinforce any inhibitions they may already have, making them less receptive to your humor.

Grooms speeches need to be functional, sincere, and with just the right amount of humor. The speech needs to be more light-hearted than the father of the bride’s speech, but not as outright comedic as the best man’s speech.

You need to work out a way of thanking all those that need be without it sounding as you are reading from a list. You need to be sincere but at the same time humorous. This is a very difficult balance to achieve for an inexperienced writer, and requires a certain amount of thought, planning, and rehearsing.

I have had the misfortune to attend weddings where the hapless groom plunders quickly and nervously through a succession of well worn clichés, then ends with a feeble attempt at humor, which is greeted with a stony silence from the audience. This is not very fun to watch, or to be a part of.

Try wherever possible to include a few choice one-liners in your groom’s speech If you practice them beforehand you should be able to hone the delivery to perfection. It does need to be genuinely funny though, so you should try it out on just one or two people first.

Of course the speech needs to consist of much more than a few funny one-liners. You can get examples of really good speech ideas from books written by professional speech writers, in which you will be able to find many speech examples that you can weave together seamlessly into a quality speech you would be proud to give, and which will be well received.

Best Man Speech Opening Lines

As the best man to the groom whom you have known for many of your years, you will understand that it is your job to tell of how you met the groom, about how beautiful his new wife-to-be is and most of all, to make the audience fall off their seats from laughing so hard. With some of these killer lines, you will be remembered not only on tape but also in people’s memories for years to come.

Start as you mean to go on

If you are able to successfully pull a sucker-punch of an opening line then you will be set for the entirety of your speech. Best man speech opening lines are absolutely key to putting a smile on the faces of your audience and to get everyone in the mood to celebrate the newlyweds’ special day. You need to prepare for this however and ensure that you have the confidence to pull it off. A fully line could be ruined if you fumble over your words or speak to quietly, that you have to repeat them.

Don’t let them breathe!

Once you have started, you are in for the long haul and cannot mellow. You can let the audience think you are mellowing and then deliver a fantastic new line to get them going again. As the best man, speech opening lines are what you need to master. If the audience fall to their knees laughing from your first line, quickly deliver the next before they even have the chance to regain their breathe. This feeling of not being able to control your laughing is almost euphoric. Not only does it give the audience such a fantastic feeling of have an amazing time, but it also leaves them as putty in your hands.

Blatant cheek

Best man speech opening lines are what the audience will remember, even after recovering the following morning from their drunken stupor, so make sure that it is a good one. You are also in the extremely fortunate position in that as best man, you can be as cheeky or rude as you wish, within reason of course. Only you will know your best friend in the way that you do, so feel free to take it right to the borderline. Some common best man speech opening lines are revolve around embarrassing the groom but do try to be as lighthearted as possible, it is likely that his entire family will be there, including his dear old grandmother. Between each thoughtful line, take a second to breathe and contain yourself and to let the audience let out their laughs. Then just as they have relaxed their vocal muscles, slip in another comical line regarding the groom and his previous escapades. If you ever feel the need for a break yourself, take a moment to have a small drink from your laugh before you continue to bring the house down.
